How to choose the right poster size for your wall

From a small shelf to the wall above your sofa: a practical way to choose a print that feels at home.

A print can be beautiful on its own and still feel too small for the wall. Before choosing a size, look at the space around it: the furniture, the ceiling height and the distance from which you will usually see it.

Start with the furniture

Above a sofa or sideboard, treat the furniture as the anchor. Try an arrangement spanning roughly two-thirds of its width as a starting point, then adjust by eye. This is a styling suggestion, not a rule: a deliberately small print can work when the surrounding space feels considered.

Try the shape before you buy

Cut paper to the dimensions you are considering and attach it using a method suitable for your wall finish. Stand back, sit down and check the view from the doorway. Remember that a frame or mount can make the finished piece larger than the print itself.

  • 21 × 30 cm: a compact accent for a shelf or a smaller arrangement.
  • 30 × 40 cm: a flexible middle size for pairs and mixed layouts.
  • 50 × 70 cm: a larger focal point above a desk or alongside smaller prints.
  • 70 × 100 cm: a bold option when the wall needs one clear statement.

These dimensions are planning examples. Check each product for the sizes actually offered.

Leave breathing room

Measure the whole arrangement, including the spaces between frames. Two medium prints may fill a wall more comfortably than one large piece, particularly above a wide sofa. Keep nearby shelves and lamps in the picture when you judge the balance.
