Measure the space, then choose the print

The best size depends on the space around the artwork as much as the artwork itself. A print that feels generous on a narrow wall can disappear above a wide sofa. Start with the furniture and the clear wall area, then compare a few paper templates before choosing.

Mark the outside edge

Use paper and low-tack tape to outline the space the finished frame will occupy. Test the tape on a hidden area first. Include the frame edge in your measurements: a print’s listed dimensions do not necessarily describe the outside of its frame.

Look from across the room

Step back to the places where you usually sit or enter the room. Try a single larger rectangle, then two smaller ones. Leave breathing room around shelves, lamps and doorways so the arrangement feels intentional.

Compare the whole arrangement

For a pair or gallery wall, measure the combined width, including gaps. Two 30 × 40 cm portrait prints with a 6 cm gap occupy 66 cm across before frame edges are added. This is a layout example, not a size recommendation for every wall.

Does an A4 print fit a 21 × 30 cm frame?

A4 measures 21 × 29.7 cm. It is close to 21 × 30 cm, but not identical. Check the frame opening and the print’s exact dimensions, especially if you are using a mount. Do not assume two similarly named sizes are interchangeable.
